Chapter III: a: The Plan and The Pact

Liang Meng sat quietly in his chambers. He was comptemplating whether to capture Chang Sha or not. He heard a knock at his door, "Enter." Zhao Yun and Yong Chou entered. Both seemed to be at odds with each other, for their eyes were angry and locked upon each other. Liang Meng sighed and said, "What is it now? I do not have time to deal with petty squables if this is indeed what this is."

Zhao Yun shook his head, "No my lord, this is about Chang Sha. I believe we should capture it now, before Sun Ce has a chance to take it! If we can get a stronghold there, he won't be able to move south my lord! Let us strike now, we have over forty thousand troops at Gui Yang, we can take half and easily hold Chang Sha while we build up our strength!" Liang Meng nodded, the plan was exactly the one he was thinking of.

Yong Chou shook his head, "No, I believe we should wait til Sun Ce or Liu Biao take Chang Sha. I doubt they will have such a great army to take it, for we are pretty much unknown. While we do have the famous warrior Zhao Yun, they no nothing else really about us. We wait for Sun Ce to take it. Then while he brings his officers to Chang Sha to help with domestics, we attack, capturing them. There we can persuade his officers to join us."

Liang Meng knew this was slightly an underhanded tactic, but there wasn't honor in this war anymore, only in battle. He nodded, it seemed the more logical plan, "I agree with Yong Chou on this one Zhao Yun, only because of the fact that we need more officers. While this isn't the most honorable thing to do, it needs to be done." Zhao Yun looked deflated, but bowed and left along with Yong Chou.

After that incident, Liang Meng was able to acquire Cheng Ying as an officer. With bandits raging around Gui Yang, Bao Long took lead and set out with three thousand bowman and wiped them out. Yong Chou had persuaded Pan Jun and Liang Meng employed Liao Li. His army grew, and so did his personnel. But as they grew, the relationship between Zhao Yun, Liang Meng, and Yong Chou grew stronger. Despite not agreeing with each other on strategies, they were closer than anything. They cemented their pact together as sworn brothers.

In the rest of the world, Sun Ce had finally taken the city of Jiang Ling from Liu Biao, and Liu Biao was now down to Xiang Yang. With Cao Cao pressing from the North and Sun Ce from the south, Liu Biao knew it was going to end soon, but he still held fast. Sun Ce, traveling north, found a large resistance against him with Liu Bei, with a reinvigorated army, they marched out to stop the advance of Sun Ce. But Sun Ce's eyes were traveling south to the city Chang Sha, where it had no master. He knew of the man named Liang Meng and how he has famous warrior Zhao Yun, but with his massive army, he doubted if he took it, he would do anything.

But he didn't know Liang Meng, what he was planning. How he planned to attack as soon as Sun Ce got situated in the Chang Sha. It was a good plan, no, it was a fantastic plan, but he knew that soon he would need a greater strategist. Now it was Zhao Yun and Yong Chou, who, while not incompetent, were not good either. He needed to find someone who could fight Zhou Yu.

((I will no longer be doing officers acquired unless they are of note.))

Chapter II: Establishing A Hold

In the rest of China, tensions flared. Cao Cao took out Zhang Xiu, stomping him out, Ma Teng began war against Cao Cao, Wei Yan took over Ru Nan, Liu Zhang began to fight Zhang Lu, and Yuan Shao looked to destroy Gongsun Du to solidify his power so he could focus on fighting Cao Cao on the central plains. So far, Liang Meng was lucky, Sun Ce was too bothered fighting Liu Biao than bother looking south to the growing army of Ling Ling.

As the city was still developing, Liang Meng was able to acquire, through debate, the services of Xing Daorong. The military, ever growing stronger, Liang Meng eyes fell east towards the city of Gui Yang. It was in dire need of someone to lead it, for it, like Ling Ling had suffered corrupt prefects and now was abandoned, with only a city council to run it. He didn't take it right away, as he knew what would befall his city of Ling Ling if he left it without many soldiers, so he focused on recruiting and arming soldiers.

Soon, officers began to hear about the lord in the south, a kind but firm lord, whom the might Zhao Yun had gone to serve. They soon began to trickle in. Liang Xiu met with warrior Cheng Dao, and after a quick and decisive duel victory, offered his hand to Cheng Dao. It was in that moment he knew that he had to serve Liang Meng.

Soon, after obtaining enough troops and supplies, he sent Zhao Yun and his son to capture Gui Yang. They marched in and were greeted with open arms. Soon officer Bao Long was persuaded to join. Gui Yang began to rise, like Ling Ling out of it's depression. He then began to focus on an army, aware of his lack of personal when compared to everyone else besides Wei Yan, he set out to see who he could persuade from other lords, instead of free officers, despite his knowledge that they would soon come after him if he did.

He was unable once more to acquire the service of any officers. He was beginning to worry, but he wouldn't let it show. He focused on building up an army, one that could easily stand up to Sun Ce or Liu Biao if they should choose to look south. But there seemed no knowledge. Word also reached Liang Meng's ears that Ma Teng was victorious against Cao Cao in Chang An and Liu Biao in Shang Yong. This knowledge gave Liang Meng hope, as Sun Ce and Liu Biao might be drawn into a war with him and leave the south to Liang.

Liang Meng sent Bao Long to capture Wu Ling. Once captured he began to focus on domestics while supplies from Ling Ling arrived. Around the rest of China, Liu Biao and Sun Ce were locked in a dangerous struggle, while Sun Ce began to more north starting a war with Liu Bei. Zhang Lu was wiped out by Ma Teng as his power grew stronger. Liu Zhang was now focused on expanding south, taking Jian Ning and now focused taking on Yun Nan. Liang Meng was focused now focused taking the coastal city of Chang Sha. His stable of officers included only twelve, including himself, but he was establishing a hold with his some 77,000 troops. Soon, it would be time for him to step onto the stage as a player.

Chapter I: The Initial Struggle

Liang Meng knew he had to find more talented officers to join him. Immediately he looked at his own populace for those who were talented and could join him. Among them he found Cheng Bing, who he debated with and lost. Not to be beaten back, he heard about the hero Zhao Yun within the area, and he set out to acquire his services. In the meantime, Yong Chou began to develop Ling Ling and prepare it for war while Liang Xiu took initiative and followed after his father, looking to acquire the services of Huan Jie, but failed in his attempt.

After his father failed in acquiring Zhao Yun, Liang Xiu set off to see if he could persuade the legendary warrior. Liang Meng recognized his need for officers, sent his son and his friend searching for officers, with Xiu acquiring the services of Cheng Bing who had recently turned down his father's offer, Liang Meng acquired the services of Lei Bo, and Yong Chou finally persuaded Huan Jie to join, who admired their persistence.

Not put off by the little success he had developed he now focused on his city. Lei Bo acquired the services of Gong Du and the city began to flourish as Liang Meng began to focus on preparing it economically and agriculturally for the war that was soon to come. However, on a wim, Xiu left the city, destined once more for Zhao Yun of Chang Shan...

Liang Xiu arrived once more at Zhao Yun's house knocking, "Lord Zhao Yun! It is I, Liang Xiu, and once more I wish to ask you to join my father's service! And as a wager, we will all leave you alone if you cannot beat me in a duel!"

This intrigued Zhao Yun. He knew his skills were good, but he knew nothing of the young boy's. He smiled and accepted. The fight lasted only ten minutes, but in that short time, Zhao Yun found out this boy was good, if not a great warrior, but he was no match for Zhao Yun. Liang Xiu, beaten and disappointed bow graciously to Zhao Yun, "You have my word that we shall not bother you anymore. May whoever you serve treat you fairly and desire you as we have."

Zhao Yun was moved by the loyalty to his father and the people of Ling Ling, like his own city of Chang Shan. He stopped the boy and said, "Wait... I will join your father. And I, Zhao Yun of Chang Shan, will give my best for Liang Meng, such as you do, even if it means my very life!" Liang Xiu had done what none had done, he traveled with Zhao Yun back to Ling Ling, with his head held high.

As Ling Ling's domestics grew stronger, so did it's military, the initial struggle to grasp power was over. Liang Meng had developed a good stable of men who served him, and leading the way was his son and Zhao Yun.

Prequel: The Rise of Liang Meng

Years: 195-199

Ling Ling was a city that was plagued with corruption for many years. People were homeless, poor, and almost ready for yet another rebellion against the Later Han Dynasty. However, a local man, Liang Meng stood up and began to take control. He joined as the prefect's agricultural adviser. He immediately found success. While the cities were poor and broken, the outlying fields showed prosperity, Liang Meng's life growing up with his farming family had paid off. Soon, glad with his success, the prefect appointed him civil adviser on top of agriculture. While it was much slower, it gradually pulled Ling Ling out of a depression and turned many people's opinions around about those who serve the empire.

However, the prefect, revitalized by his success in Ling Ling, began to enforce laws and taxes that Liang Meng didn't approve. The people once again grew restless. It wasn't as bad as it was before, but it wasn't good. The people were harshly beaten in the street if they didn't have the money and the deaths began to add up. Eventually, Liang Meng gathered the support of the mob and some soldiers, and overthrew the prefect. He sent a letter to the emperor to let him know what exactly had happened. It was a few months later before he got a response, but when he did, he was dumbfounded.

An envoy from the emperor himself and made his way, and announced aloud in the city square that Liang Meng was to be the new prefect of Ling Ling. He bowed graciously and made a pledge to serve the Han faithfully. He immediately appointed his close friend Yong Chou as his agricultural adviser. His son, who grew up studying the spear and leadership skills, took control of the newly formed militia and while only fourteen, showed himself to be a competent commander.

Year: 200

Liang Meng slowly solidified his power in Ling Ling. He once again brought Ling Ling out of the slump. He implemented taxes that, while frequent, were enough for the people to handle and brought in money constantly for his son's ever growing army. The militia, now formed into an army, grew from a meager group of five thousand, to twenty thousand strong, lead by Liang Xiu. Liang Meng knew that he needed to expand soon, and he appointed Yong Chou as his strategist. He then set out to find more personnel.

However, in the North, Cao Cao and Yuan Shao grew increasingly angry with each other, war teetering on the edge with Gongsun Du and Liu Bei caught in the middle. In the south, Sun Ce and Liao Biao begin a naval war. In the west, Ma Teng prepares for war against Cao Cao and Zhang Lu while Liu Zhang prepares to move south into Jiang Ning and Nanman. The empire was now at civil war.
